Journalism

I began my career in journalism and gained outstanding editorial skills, including researching, attention to detail, writing punchy news stories and transforming press releases. I have worked as a reporter at the Metro, chief reporter for the Somerset Live regional news website, news editor for the Bath Chronicle and regional editor for Nub News.

I broke the story about transgender criminal Tara Hudson being sent to a male prison and secured the first interview on her release, revealing the harassment she suffered in Bristol Prison. Following the outcry, the Ministry of Justice issued new guidance for the treatment of transgender prisoners.

The Education Editor of the Guardian, Richard Adams, praised my “tenacious” reporting on vice-chancellor pay and and I wrote a comment piece for the paper on the importance of the regional media.

In 2021, I was a national news reporter for the Metro UK website, where I sourced highly sharable stories and filed completed copy to sharp deadlines. These are a few of my stories.

One of my favourite pieces was a comprehensive ‘Bath power list’. I used my local knowledge to compile a longlist of 100 key city figures, wrote biographies and sources photos of each of them. It totalled 10,000 words! I embedded their profiles in Playbuzz at the bottom of an online article so that visitors could vote for their choices, and emailed the article to all the candidates encouraging them to share it on their personal social media accounts. Once the voting was over I published a follow-up with quotes from the winners on what their success in the poll said about their standing in Bath. It proved an extremely engaging and fun piece of content.
